The IJR is sad to learn of the passing of former anti-apartheid activist, economics professor and former Member of Parliament Prof Ben Turok. We will remember him as a stalwart who championed the cause of freedom and social justice.

In May this year, Prof Turok delivered a keynote address at one of IJR’s event, reflecting on the 25th anniversary of democracy and the existence of the Human Rights Institute of South Africa (HURISA).

In his presentation, he assessed the gains made and looked at the challenges which lie before us as a country. The IJR extends condolences to Prof Turok’s family and all who knew him. Prof Turok’s death is a loss to the country and may his soul rest in perfect peace.
