Dying to be men: A new Generation of manhood

In 1987, at just 20 years old, Cape Flats anti-apartheid activist and youth leader Ashley Kriel was murdered by police. In commemoration of his legacy of leadership and the contribution that youth across South Africa played in the struggle against apartheid, the IJR hosts an annual memorial youth lecture. This year, the lecture is hosted in partnership with the Ashley Kriel Skills Development Centre based at Bonteheuwel Secondary School.

The Institute for Justice and Reconciliation (IJR) recognises that young leaders today, as in the struggle against apartheid, have a key role to play in building a more inclusive future.

The 16th annual Ashley Kriel Memorial Lecture commemorates the struggle and sacrifice of Ashley Kriel. A young man from Bonteheuwel – the quintessential representation of youth resistance – who fought in the struggle for freedom for all South Africans. This years’ lecture under the theme Dying to be men: A new generation of manhood aims to explore how ideas of masculinity and manhood informs gender relations. The lecture will also reflect on the context that gave rise to the young lions of the 70s and 80s and the struggles facing young men and women today. For too many communities, violence and SGBV is pervasive and severely limits the social freedoms of particularly the most vulnerable in society.

This year the lecture celebrates the positive examples of manhood in South African communities – particularly on the Cape Flats – unpack the forces that shape these, and explore the link between how we raise boys, violence and SGBV. This year, the Lecture will take place at Ashley’s former High School – Bonteheuwel Secondary School at 6:30pm.
